Baby Facts You Should Know
August 25, 2010 – 5:10 amKids get bigger faster than anybody realizes. In the beginning an infant is a single celled organism and within a very short time it is a living being with a heart, lungs and a brain. Only nine months are needed to turn those few cells into a real baby that lives outside of his or her mother. Not too long after that they begin forming personalities and even making their own decisions. Things like moving on their own, needing help with diaper changes and even how they learn to speak are pretty commonly understood. This article contains a few facts about early childhood and babies that should be new to you.
Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? Babies are born with eyes that are not completely finished yet and only partially formed synapses between the eyes and the brain. Babies see primary colors better than any other, which is why you should choose those colors for his nursery and toys. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. Pastels are better for adult eyes.
This is why a baby will sometimes choose one toy instead of another. So that means that all of those black and white mobiles that you scoff at in stores for being too “artsy” are actually better for your baby’s developing eyes than the pastel one you were probably thinking of getting! You’re already aware that a fetus can hear sounds while he is still in his mother’s womb. There are studies upon studies proving that babies will react strongly to the sounds that have reached them through their mothers’ bodies. Did you already know that a baby’s ears are very sensitive to different decibel levels even while they are in the womb? Even before the baby is birthed, his ears are very sensitive. Most doctors agree that while a woman is pregnant and that while her baby is still young that she keeps all of the sounds in her house to levels quieter than her vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners usually push the limit of the baby’s comfort level with noise, so it is a good idea to keep the music down and to avoid things like heavy construction and loud traffic.
